How to propagate sea buckthorn
Sea buckthorn can be found among other trees by oblong leaves and small yellow, orange or red fruits. The name of the plant was not just given: it is based on the fact that the berries are located very close to the branches - as if they were tightly wrapped around them. The fruits have an unusual taste and are very useful - they are included in the diet in fresh form, many desserts are prepared from them. It is not surprising that gardeners often ask themselves: in what way is it possible to grow sea buckthorn at home.
Sea buckthorn is very widespread in Europe, Siberia, throughout Russia, as it is able to withstand severe cold. The flowering period begins in spring, the flowers are pollinated with the help of wind. The fruits are represented by small berries, which are abundantly located on long branches. They have a sweet and sour taste and a pronounced pineapple smell.
The structure of sea buckthorn. Elevated part: 1 - root neck; 2 - trunk; 3 - a branch of the first branching order; 4 - a branch of the second branching order; 5 - a third-order branch of a branch (fruit-bearing branch); 6 - a branch of the fourth branching order (growth of the current year)
To propagate a plant in its own area, it is not necessary to go for a seedling to a nursery.
There are other simple ways to do this:
- by seeds;
- using the division of the bush.
Depending on the amenities and personal preferences, each gardener has the right to choose the most suitable option.
Did you know? For the special taste of berries Sea-buckthorn was called "Siberian pineapple."
Propagation of the plant by the root shoot is the fastest way.. Overgrowth is selected for planting. It is obtained by separating the roots of sea buckthorn with garden tools (knife, pruner) or just a shovel. It is best to do this at a distance of 1.5 m from the tree.
A place for a subsequent transplant must be selected in advance. The shoots are planted in a hole up to 40 cm deep, watering. At first, the landing site requires watering and top dressing.
Growing sea buckthorn from a shank
Sea buckthorn can be grown from two types of cuttings: lignified and green.
The first are selected for landing in November. For this, copies of a thickness of 5 mm are suitable. For hardening in winter, the selected cuttings are dug a little with snow. In the spring they are cut so that their length is at least 20 cm. Next, you need to leave the specimens in clean water for a couple of weeks, until the first root primordia appear.
A seat (it should be at least 1 m in diameter) is prepared in the fall. For this, up to 8 kg of humus is applied per 1 m² of soil. Before landing, the place is well leveled.
Landing must be done when the earth warms up to + 5 ° C. The shank is lowered into the ground so that only a pair of buds is visible above it. It is watered and mulched. Further, you need to carefully monitor the condition of the soil, not forgetting to water.
Green cuttings suitable for propagation in summer in July. Cuttings are cut with a length of about 10 cm. For better growth, two cuts are made on the selected cuttings - the upper and lower, then dip them into a special growth fluid. It can be “Heteroauxin” in the proportion of 1 tablet per 1 liter of pure water for 16 hours. After the cuttings you need to rinse - and you can proceed to the landing.
Important! When the plant reaches 50 cm, this will be an indicator that it can be replanted as an independent tree.
Planting material is lowered into the soil 4 cm deep. It’s better to bury the hole with your hands, diluting the soil with peat so that it turns out to be light. To create a greenhouse effect, the plant is covered with a jar, which must be removed as soon as the stalk begins to grow on its own.

Dividing the bush
The division of the bush is most often used to transplant it to another place. The procedure is carried out in early spring and late autumn, when the soil is quite cold - + 5 ° С.
Did you know? Sea buckthorn in Greece was called the “glossy horse” (Hippophae), due to the fact that its leaves were fed to horses, after which their hair began to shine.
Long-standing branches are removed from the bushes, using a shovel they dig it out of the ground. Carefully shake off the soil, and then divide the bush with secateurs. Each part of the bush must have a healthy root; it is also desirable that in each part it is well developed. After the bush you need to dig in a new place, water well. An additional advantage for growth will be fertilizing with humus.
Propagating the plant by layering, you need to take the lower branch of the tree and press it to the ground. Part of the branch can be wrapped in earth, but leave the top on top. Then the branch is well covered with humus. This procedure must be carried out in the spring, during the summer watering the future planting material - and next spring the cuttings will be ready for further planting.
The advantage of the method is the simplicity of the action and the quality of the shoots obtained.
Ripe fruits have seeds that can be used to propagate the plant. A certain amount of seeds is sent to the ground in the fall, before the onset of cold weather.. During the winter, they will have time to harden and begin to grow in the spring. However, it is necessary to be prepared for the fact that a full-fledged seedling will be formed only after 2-3 years.
Landing and Care Recommendations
Before planting sea buckthorn, it is worthwhile to find out the features of planting a plant and caring for it. So, in order to get the desired crop, at least one male plant must be planted for 5-6 female plants for pollination.
There are differences between female and male plants:
- Male kidneys are large, have 5–7 covering scales.
- Females are two times smaller than males, have 2 scales.
Important! It should be borne in mind that planting material selected in one region may not take root in another due to differences in climate, soil composition or humidity.
It makes no sense to create trunks for fertilizer, because the roots grow in breadth by several meters. Propagating the plant by cuttings, it can be fertilized with potassium and phosphorus. While shoot formation takes place, it requires timely watering.
Plant pruning is carried out in spring, before buds appear.. It is possible to form a crown independently, cutting off uneven and irregular branches, up to 4 years. After 10 years, you can start trimming anti-aging. To do this, dry and old, aching branches are removed.
Common mistakes when breeding sea buckthorn
Even the most experienced summer residents and gardeners can make mistakes when propagating sea buckthorn:
- Incorrectly chosen method of plant propagation. Lack of experience.
- Wrong place for planting seedlings. It is optimal when it is sunny, moist, but with good drainage.
- Improper care, insufficient watering.
- Incorrect landing time. Each method requires its own period for implementation.
Sea buckthorn is not only tasty fruits and jam, the taste of which is familiar from childhood, but also a beautiful plant. It is bred for aesthetic purposes and landscape design. To grow a tree of sea buckthorn, you need to choose the right method of reproduction. The choice should depend on the experience of the gardener in this matter.
